Guidelines for Writing an Abstract


Proposals for contributions are welcome from all fields of English education.


Your proposal needs to be in a word document and should be set out under the following headings:
• Title of proposal
• Authors(s) of proposal including affiliations and email addresses
• First and second choice theme
• 3 - 5 keywords
• General description on research questions, objectives and theoretical framework (up to 500 words)
• Methods/methodology (up to 150 words)
• Actual findings/expected outcomes/results (up to 200 words)
• Intent of publication
• References (300 words)


The submission should contain a maximum of 500 - 850 words + references.
It is not possible to include tables or graphs in the submission form.

Review Criteria


The criteria used in reviewing each proposal will be as follows:


• The proposal should be directly related to a topic of interest for English educators;
• it should involve systematic enquiry of an empirical or analytic nature and should make reference to a theoretical framework;
• the background, method, results and implications should be set out clearly in a manner which is accessible to an international audience;
• it should take account of the New Zealand and/or international context;
• it should help a dialogue to develop by reference, for example, to current policies and practices, or intellectual and educational traditions; and


The review process


Papers will be blind refereed according to the following process:
• Authors name, address, phone number, email address etc must be on a separate cover sheet.
• There should be no indication of who the author is.
• All author details will be removed before the proposal is sent to two referees.
• Papers will be allocated a unique number.
• Each reviewer will be required to complete a review report and return it to the program committee.
• Where both referees accept the paper, the reports will be sent to the author who may consider the feedback in preparing the paper for presentation.
• If the reviewers disagree, the paper will be sent to a third reviewer.
• If a paper is accepted by two of the three reviewers it will be included in the program.


Reviewers will be selected from NZATE and Faculties of English and Education in NZ and overseas universities.
